Parasites are organisms that live inside another organism, known as the host, often causing harm by consuming nutrients and potentially causing tissue damage. Common examples of parasites include worms, protozoa, lice, and certain bacteria. Parasites can also be zoonotic, meaning they can be transmitted between animals and humans, or vice versa.
Many children are unaware of the risks of contracting parasites from pets around them, which is why there is a need for education on zoonotic parasitic diseases, including toxoplasmosis, giardiasis, scabies, soil-transmitted helminths, and the importance of clean and healthy living.
All students at SDN 2 Gubugklakah received educational materials during the socialisation, which was conducted in the school hall and covered classes 1 to 6. The socialisation was delivered daily with different topics on zoonotic parasitic diseases. The methods used to introduce parasitic diseases to the students included providing educational booklets, and other methods such as educational videos, posters, and quizzes in the form of pre-tests and post-tests, presented using PowerPoint. These methods captured the children’s attention with engaging illustrations and content.
